What’s New in the SAFe® 5.1 Big Picture?

The distinguishing feature of SAFe is that it keeps pace with evolving digital market trends. With its continuous delivery and incremental model, SAFe helps enterprises stay at the forefront of their markets by constantly adapting to new business models. The small Big Picture releases are subject to "dot release" just like the current Big Picture version 5.1.

Over time, increasing progress and gaining new knowledge led to the release of a new SAFe version, similar to SAFe 5, and increased business agility. In such cases, SAFe Agile practitioners and SPCs must be up-to-date with new knowledge, relevant SAFe training, and hold the latest SAFe certification.

In the below figure, changes and included points are highlighted in numbers.

1) Operational Value Stream (OVS)

It describes how the company delivers value to its customers. These follow a series of actions designed to fix an issue or product/service delivery to the end-user.

2) Participatory Budgeting (PB)

It is a process used by lean portfolio management (LPM) to allocate the entire portfolio budget to DVS.

3) Development Value Stream

Value streams at the Big Picture portfolio level have been renamed development value streams (DVS) to clearly distinguish them from OVS (operational value streams).

4) Indicating solutions in the Portfolio

The 'Solution' icon explains that creating value streams provides feasible, desirable, and sustainable solutions.

5) Continuous Delivery Pipeline (CDP)

·       Improved CDP icon to clearly show the DevOps triple infinity loop.

·       The PI boundaries thickness has been reduced to better reflect the CD model.

·       Release Box icons are scattered throughout the PI to indicate the occurrence of releases at any time.

·       Program increment has been renamed PI to better describe its purpose as a planning interval, rather than delivering a large batch once per PI.

·       Repeating infinity loops during iteration to emphasize that this activity is continuous.

6) Solution Icon

Previously, the blue solution icon was replaced with a "solution box" to match the Agile Product Delivery competency.

7) Dev(Sec)Ops

Security (Sec) has been added to the DevOps icon and now redirects to a new landing page that emphasizes that security is an essential DevOps part.

8) Business | Technology

‘Business | Dev| Ops | Support’ icon changed to ‘Business | Technology’. The icon for agile business practices has been updated to include a landing page identifying the practices of agile technology and business. These practices now include marketing, contracts, people operations, hardware development, and software development.

9) SPC

The SAFe Program Consultants (SPCs) reduce visual clutter and become the more general term for the role.

10) 5.1 Big Picture

The new SAFe Big Picture required an update to SAFe version 5.1.
