#1: Difference in Scope

Sprint planning is basically for teams, while on the other hand, PI planning is carried for the complete ART or Agile Release Train. For instance, an ART may well consist of five to twelve agile teams.

#2: Difference in Planning Horizon

If we look closely at Sprint planning and scrum, it is of 1-4 weeks in length and when scrum is used in the context of SAFe, the default planning horizon is of 2 weeks. However, in PI planning, the time horizon is longer stretching 8-12 weeks. Usually, many organizations prefer 12 weeks as it works well with the financial quarter of their organization.

In Leading SAFe, the default is ten weeks for organizations looking to be more agile and nimble while having greater number of touch points.

#3: Difference in Intent

What is the primary intent? In sprint planning, the main intent revolves around planning user stories. The aim is also to ascertain the value that all the teams and teams deliver. The focus is on evaluating who will be performing the tasks.

On the other hand, in PI planning, there is higher level intent. It can be considered road map planning where what is to be done over 4-6 sprints is considered.

Sprint planning can usually be done in about 2-4 hours. On the contrary, duration for PI planning is around 2 days. It is possible to have 1-day or 3-day planning events, but officially, PI planning happens over 2-days.
